As in most western countries the education system on the Costa Blanca consists of either public (free) or private education. It is law in Spain for children to attend School from the age of 6 – 16 years old.
There are Public schools in most towns on the Costa Blanca and a limited number of private Spanish schools. There are also several international schools which are all private. Families looking to relocate to this sunny region following buying a property have a range of options to choose from.
Public education
The majority of towns on the Costa Blanca are home to a local public school. They normally accept children from Infants through to Secondary school (3-16 years old) The system is categorised as follows:
- Infants (Infantil) 3 – 6 years.
- Primary (Primaria) 6 – 12 years (compulsory).
- Secondary school (E.S.O.) 12 – 16 years (compulsory)
After Secondary School pupils can choose to sit their ‘Bachillerato’, this roughly is equivalent to the English ‘A’ level system and can be quite academically challenging. Thereafter, if successful, pupils can choose to go on to university.
