Activities: Hiking in and around Javea 11/10/2018 Hiking in and around Javea is simply awesome! After living in Javea for over 8 years, I still haven’t covered all the trails available. There are hikes for all levels and abilities — a real diversity. For those of you feeling energetic From Javea port, there is a hike that initially has you scrambling a bit, but flattens out to a long loop around the cliff and eventually brings you out on the San Antonio Cape or Cap De San Antonio. This is where the lighthouse is, that overlooks Javea on one side and Denia on the other. It is a short hike of about 1.5 kilometres but can take at least 45 minutes at a slower pace as it can be quite steep in places with an elevation of almost 200 metres from start to finish. If you can get up the first 100 metres which is the steepest, then you will have no problem with the rest. The views are stunning from Cap San Antonio and the walk highly enjoyable. From Cap San Antonio there are many other walks and hikes that go off in various directions. Along the Plana, you can go down to the magnificent sea caves of Cova Tallada or up the very imposing Montgo mountain, or simply head back down the Javea Port and enjoy sitting in a cafe, bar or restaurant and rehydrate after a rewarding hike. If you feel like climbing to the summit of Javea’s Mongto Mountain, you can park at the shooting range on the plana and walk up. Make sure to bring a packed lunch with you and wear good hiking shoes. At the summit, the Montgo is about 753m above sea level. The views from the top are breathtaking and it you are feeling energetic it is definitely worth a trip. The walk does involve a little scrambling so be prepared. If you are not ready to climb to the summit just yet and want to work up to it, there is another route to the “eye” of the Montgo, which is slightly less taxing and takes less time, but just as fun with amazing views of Javea once you reach the eye. I have walked to the eye with my six-year-old son, so this can be done as a family. There is also a scenic walk to Granadella Castle, starting at the beach below and walking up the cliff. This is a beautiful walk but can take about 4 hours, so you really need a picnic with you so you can stop for a break once you reach the castle. A good family walk A shorter walk, and one of my personal favourites is the walk to Cap Prim from Portixol. You can park up on the side of the road near the Portixol cross and walk down the hill and along the top. With the exception of the last bit where there is a little bit of scrambling, the majority of the walk is flat and fun and you have magnificent views as you are so high up. This is a brilliant walk to do with children as it’s reasonably easy. Just make sure they stay with you and don’t run off as there are lots of cliff edges. Easier walks Cala Blanca For those of you wanting to experience the beauty but also want to take it easy, you can take a stroll along the boardwalk at the Cala Blanca. With the sea in front of you, you can enjoy the fresh sea air and the beautiful scenery even with those family members who are not so able bodied. Then if you are feeling energetic at the end of the path, there are some steps leading up to a short circular walk overlooking the sea from higher up. It's a beautiful short walk and definitely worth taking friends and family who are over visiting. The walk to Ermita Santa Llucia From just outside the old town of Javea there is a beautiful little walk from the Church to the Ermita San Llucia on the hill. It takes about 20 minutes up and 20 down and you can walk up one way and come down another, so you will have completed a short loop. From Santa Llucia you have views of most of Javea. It really is quite spectacular. La Falzia Viewpoint As you head up towards Cabo La Nao viewpoint there are several other viewpoints on the way. One of these is La Falzia. You can park up outside it and go to see the view. It can be deceiving at first because it just looks like a viewpoint, but if you veer off to the right and into the forest, you can walk through the forest and along the cliff edge for quite a bit. It is a lovely little walk and fun for children playing in the forest. There are so many routes in Javea, it is difficult the mention them all, but one thing is for sure, if you enjoy Hiking, you will love living in Javea.
